In a world where the imperative to combat climate change is at the forefront, the webinar titled “Incorporating Nature Into Corporate Climate Strategies” stands as a beacon of hope and actionable insights. On November 1st, BCSD Malaysia was delighted to host this webinar in collaboration with the Natural Climate Solutions Alliance (NCSA) of the World Business Councils for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
Kicking off the webinar, Giulia Carbone (NCSA) set the stage with her introductory remarks, emphasizing the imperative for businesses to show leadership and invest in high-quality natural climate solutions.
Session 1: Unlocking the Potential of Natural Climate Solutions
The first session was a deep dive into the world of natural climate solutions, their profound significance, and the diverse interventions that can help sustainably manage our natural resources. One of the strategies discussed was the Nature Climate Solutions (NCS) procurement hub which offers businesses a pathway to navigate the voluntary carbon market. The esteemed speakers for this session included Jennicca Gordon (NCSA), Dewi Sari (World Resource Institute, Indonesia), and Mikkel Larsen (Climate Impact X).
Session 2: Navigating Challenges and Opportunities
In the second session, the webinar delved deeper into the challenges faced by businesses and financial institutions as they transition to reduce their negative environmental impact. We also explored the exciting opportunities that align with the urgent imperative of reversing nature loss by 2030. This session underscored the critical importance of addressing nature-related transition risks and adopting vital frameworks like the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosure (TNFD). Our distinguished panelists for this session included Nadine McCormick(WBCSD), Hari Priyadi (Environmental Resource Management, Indonesia), Mohd Nizam Basiron (PETRONAS Malaysia), and Lee King Vai (Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad).
Closing Remarks: Paving the Way for a Nature-Positive Future
Celine Ng (BCSD Malaysia) wrapped up this webinar with a closing remark that emphasized the need for corporate leadership that revolves around nature-based strategies and tangible, high-impact actions, including investments in top-tier natural climate solutions.
The journey towards net zero involves informed strategies based on scientific insights, encompassing Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) and other carbon removal methods that can seamlessly integrate into a company’s value chain. Moreover, emerging frameworks such as the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures, or TNFD (the pathway), Science Based Targets for Nature, or SBTN (the target), and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, or GBF (the goal), require global alignment and sectors to work collaboratively in building global momentum on climate actions. Beyond mere theoretical discourse, the event is geared towards providing tangible takeaways through compelling business cases that underscore the imperative of adopting natural climate solutions. In doing so, it sets the stage for a paradigm shift in the corporate approach to climate action. Above all, the primary objective of this event is to empower local businesses with the knowledge and confidence required to make prudent and resilient decisions in the face of a rapidly changing climate landscape. The intrinsic value of natural capital is a central theme, highlighting the symbiotic relationship between sustainable business practices and the preservation of our planet. As we look to the future, the webinar represents not only a learning opportunity but a call to action. It beckons businesses to embrace nature-positive approaches and integrate them into their climate strategies, recognizing that corporate success and environmental stewardship are inextricably linked.
Join the Movement for a Nature-Positive Planet by 2030
BCSD Malaysia urges businesses to unite and work collectively toward our shared goal of achieving a nature-positive planet by 2030. It’s a call to action, and together, we can make a substantial impact on the path to a more sustainable future.
